College Major & Impact on Job Search

Ask most what they wanted to do after high school and more likely than not they will say “I wanted to go to university” which, generally speaking, is a good idea but after graduation many realize that both going to college and picking the right major are the keys to career financial success and a foundational element of any job search.  According to a recent report 53% of new graduates are either jobless or underemployed; meaning they do not have a job or have a job that is not related to their college major.  In particular liberal arts majors (i.e. psychology, fine arts, humanities, etc.) have the highest unemployment rate among college graduates whereas engineering, Healthcare or IT majors have the lowest unemployment rate.

Si preguntas a muchas personas lo que deseaban hacer después de graduarse de la secundaria lo mas probable que te diga es que “Yo quería ir a la Universidad” lo cual, es una buena idea pero después de la graduación muchos caen en cuenta que ir a la universidad y escoger la profesión indicada, es la clave para el éxito financiero y es el elemento fundamental de la búsqueda cualquier empleo. Según un reporte recientemente publicado el 35 por ciento de los nuevos graduados están sin empleo o su salario es por debajo de lo que ofrece el mercado, lo que significa que no tienen empleo o el que tienen no esta relacionado con la profesión que estudio en la universidad.  En profesiones especificas como (psicología, artes y humanidades, etc) tienen el nivel mas alto de desempleo entre los graduados de la universidad mientras que los profesionales en ingeniería, Salud o carreras técnicas tienen el mas bajo nivel de desempleo.

1. Resume does not have relevant accomplishments.   Before you apply take a moment and review the job description in detail to determine what things the employer wants.  Each and every bullet point should address a concern mentioned in the job description.  For more information on how to handle this process checkout my “Tips fora Successful Job Search” article.

1. El currículo vitae no tiene los logros más relevantes. Antes de llenar una solicitud de empleo tomate un momento y lee los detalles mas importantes de la descripción de puesto para determinar que es lo que el empleador quiere del candidato. Is the recruiting industry declining?

The US recruiting/staffing industry is big business; 2010 total revenue was approximately $100 billion (B)¹ and third-party recruiting firms (i.e. executive search/headhunting/search and placement firms) generated $10B in total revenue.  Although total industry revenue has improved post-recession, third-party recruiting revenue has not.  In fact, on the recruiting side revenue has dropped quite a bit from the high of $17.5B² in 2007.  For example in 2010, as a percentage of total revenue third-party recruiting reached a nine year low at 10% whereas staffing revenue reached a new high at 90% (click on the chart below for additional details).

Before I dive into the things to consider before you leave a company it is important to realize that having only one out of the ten is not enough to warrant quitting a job; usually if three or more apply to you then it is time to consider other opportunities.  Also, it is always better to have a job before you quit; it makes it easier to get offers and keeps your career moving without any breaks.  With that said, here is the top ten list of things to consider before you quit your job.

Employer Wants to Check your Facebook Account? Here's What to Do - 3 Tips.

This topic has sparked a big debate recently and I wanted to share my thoughts as well as provide insight on how to deal with it.   The basic issue is that some employers are starting to ask candidates as part of the application process to either give them their password and username so they can access their account or requesting the candidate to login during the interview while the interviewer reviews his/her profile.

This is outrageous to many candidates as they put very personal things on Facebook and want to keep those things private while some employers think it is a great way to learn more about the candidates character and if she/he will pose any risks to the firm.  In either case it is a touchy issue that may become a reality in the new "social era".

¿Tu Empleador Quiere Entrar a Tu Cuenta de Facebook? Esto es lo que Debes Hacer!

Este es un tema que recientemente ha provocado grandes debates y quiero compartir contigo mi humilde opinión así como también proveerte información de como lidiar con esto.  Algunos patrones han comenzado a preguntar en las solicitudes de empleo  la identificación o clave de la cuenta de Facebook para ellos poder entrar en la página o igualmente le pide a la persona que ingrese a la cuenta durante la entrevista para ver su  perfil.

Esto es indignante para muchos de los candidatos puesto que algunos de ellos colocan cosas personales en Facebook y quieren mantenerlas en privado,  mientras que el entrevistador esta pensando que es una buena manera de saber un poco mas de la personalidad o carácter del candidato y si podría poner en riesgo la reputación  de la empresa.  Esto es algo que podría convertirse en la realidad de la nueva “era social”.

7 Careers with Good Pay, Low Investment

If you are starting fresh or thinking about changing careers here is a list of 7 careers worth considering.  They are not ranked in any particular order.  I chose careers that I felt would give the most job security while also paying well in the least amount of time.

1. Engineer. Generally speaking engineers get jobs but if you want to ensure employment consider Computer Science or Petroleum engineering specialties where median pay is $85K and $122K, respectively. Requires Bachelor Degree.

Si estas pensando en cambiarte de profesión aquí te presento una lista de siete profesiones que deberías considerar. Estas carreras no están en un orden específico. Sin embargo, escogí las  que considero que te ofrecerían no solo seguridad laboral sino también buena remuneración en menos tiempo de preparación para entrar al campo laboral.

1. Ingeniería. En general los ingenieros siempre obtienen empleo, pero si quieres tener seguridad laboral deberías considerar tomar Ingeniería en Computación o en Petróleo puesto que el sueldo promedio es entre 85 mil y 122 mil dólares anualmente. Por supuesto para ello requieres obtener el titulo de Ingeniero.
